Attracting Gen Z in the Workplace? Focus on Well-being and Sustainability
Generation Z, or simply Gen Z, was born between the mid-1990s and early 2000s. This generation has a unique look on the job market, with fresh perspectives and priorities that emphasize well-being and sustainability. For companies looking to attract these young talents, it is essential to focus on the ‘S’ pillar of ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance). This S-pillar emphasizes social aspects such as workforce health, well-being, diversity and inclusion, employee engagement and retention, talent attraction and training, and more.
Gen Z has grown up in an era of technological advancement and social change. They are digitally proficient, value authenticity, and are highly aware of social issues. This means they seek companies that are not only financially successful but also have a positive impact on society and the well-being of their employees.
Survey Results
Ormit Talent, in collaboration with Ivox, conducted a survey among 877 Belgian Gen Z'ers. Here are some interesting results:
- 34% prioritize a good work atmosphere.
- 28% choose work-life balance.
- 70% find sustainability policies important.
- 32% consider better development opportunities crucial when deciding to change jobs.
- Young people prefer video for personal development.
These findings underscore Gen Z's need for a work environment that prioritizes both well-being and sustainability.
Safety, Diversity, and Inclusion
Gen Z employees place high value on a safe and healthy work environment. They expect companies to proactively take measures to protect their physical and mental health, especially considering recent global health crises.
This generation is also very diverse and expects this diversity to be reflected in their workplace. They look for companies that promote diversity and inclusion, where everyone feels valued and respected.
Finding the Right Balance
Personal and professional development is crucial for Gen Z. They are eager to learn and seek companies that invest in training and development programs that help them grow and advance in their careers. This is confirmed by the fact that 32% of them find better development opportunities crucial when considering a job change.
A good balance between work and personal life is a top priority for Gen Z. They prefer flexible working hours and the ability to work remotely, allowing them to better manage their work and personal lives.
Leaders of Tomorrow
Gen Z employees want to feel engaged in their work and contribute to something bigger than themselves. Companies that offer opportunities for engagement and clearly communicate how employees' work contributes to company goals will attract and retain these young talents.
By focusing on the ‘S’ pillar, companies can not only meet the expectations of Gen Z but also create a positive corporate culture that benefits all employees. It is an investment in the future of the company and in the talents that will eventually lead the company.
